The Battle

History & Significance

After the Lamonts surrendered their castles to the Campbells under promise of quarter, some two hundred prisoners were massacred at Dunoon churchyard. Some were buried alive. The atrocity was one of the worst acts of the Scottish Civil War. After the Restoration, the Earl of Argyll was tried partly for this massacre and executed in 1661.
