The Battle

History & Significance

John Lambert's crossing of the Firth of Forth in July 1651 was one of the most daring operations of the Civil Wars. Cromwell's army was stalled before Edinburgh; Lambert found a ford at Queensferry and crossed with a cavalry force, then defeated a Scots force at Inverkeithing. This severed the Scottish army's supply line and forced David Leslie's move south into England — leading directly to the Battle of Worcester and the end of the wars.
