The Battle

History & Significance

One of Cromwell's most important early cavalry victories. He attacked the Royalists besieging Gainsborough, won the engagement, and killed the young Royalist commander Charles Cavendish who was trapped in a ravine. However, a much larger Royalist force arrived and Parliament was forced to withdraw, leaving Gainsborough to fall. Cromwell demonstrated his ability to maintain cavalry discipline after a successful charge — the key skill lacking in most Civil War commanders on both sides.
