History & Significance

The beginning of the Second Viking Age in England. After thirty years of relative peace, Norse raids resumed under Aethelred II. Southampton was sacked and the population taken as slaves. Similar raids hit Thanet and Cheshire the same year. The escalating pattern of raids throughout the 980s reflected both the weakness of Aethelred's administration and the new political ambitions of Scandinavian rulers seeking tribute and ultimately conquest.
