The Battle

History & Significance

This skirmish was part of the Pilgrimage of Grace, the most serious rebellion against Tudor rule. The mobilization of thousands of rebels in Craven demonstrated the widespread popular opposition to Henry VIII's religious reforms and dissolution of the monasteries across northern England. The uprising's scale forced the Crown to take the rebellion seriously and ultimately led to brutal suppression and executions that served as a warning against future dissent.
