The Battle

History & Significance

When Charles I issued Commissions of Array in June 1642 to raise forces under the medieval prerogative, competing with Parliament's Militia Ordinance, confrontations between royal and parliamentary nominees erupted across the Midland counties. In Warwickshire, Worcestershire, and Staffordshire, rival parties of gentry faced each other at muster fields in standoffs that sometimes came close to physical conflict. These standoffs hardened county allegiances before the formal declaration of war.
