History & Significance

Peterborough lay on the western frontier of the Eastern Association's territory. Its capture and garrisoning prevented Royalist forces from Newark using it as a base to penetrate into Cambridgeshire. Cromwell's cavalry operations in this area during 1643 helped establish the western boundary of the Parliamentary zone that provided the secure base for the New Model Army's subsequent national operations.
