History & Significance

While Kett's Rebellion blazed in Norfolk, disturbances against enclosure spread through the Midlands in 1549. In Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, and other counties, protesters threw down hedges and fences. The government's ruthless suppression — including the use of foreign mercenaries — contributed to the fall of the Protector Somerset. The Midlands disturbances were less organised than Kett's but represented the same agrarian crisis.
