The Battle

History & Significance

The Great Trust and Commission was a Royalist organisational structure established in 1657-58 to coordinate insurrection across England. John Mordaunt was the principal organiser in contact with Charles II in Brussels. Thurloe penetrated the organisation and the planned 1658 rising was aborted; the conspiracy nonetheless kept Royalist networks active for the Restoration.
