History & Significance

Emperor Septimius Severus made Eboracum his imperial capital for the last three years of his life, launching massive campaigns into Caledonia from Yorkshire. He conducted two major campaigns, subduing the Maeatae and Caledonians with great brutality. Yorkshire became the effective centre of the Roman Empire in 208-211. Severus died at York in 211 — the only emperor to die in Britain — and was succeeded by Caracalla.
