History & Significance

The only battle of the Second Bishops' War — and the most decisive. The Scottish Covenanting army forced a crossing of the Tyne at Newburn, routing the English force with artillery. Newcastle fell and the Scots occupied northern England. This defeat forced Charles I to recall Parliament — the Long Parliament — setting in motion the events that led to the Civil War.
