History & Significance

The alliance of pagan Penda of Mercia and the Christian but virulently anti-English Cadwallon destroyed the Christian king Edwin. Northumbria split into its component kingdoms of Bernicia and Deira, both ruled by pagans, and Cadwallon ravaged the north for nearly a year in an attempt to exterminate the Northumbrian people.
