The Battle

History & Significance

Piercebridge fort on the River Tees was built in the early fourth century to replace Binchester as the key Dere Street river crossing in County Durham. The construction followed the Allectus revolt (296 AD) when northern defences had lapsed. The fort commanded the point where the main Roman road from York to Hadrian's Wall crossed the Tees — a strategically vital point repeatedly contested over Roman and medieval periods alike.
