The Little Dennis blockhouse at the foot of the Pendennis headland was built around 1540 as a lower-level battery to complement the elevated guns of Pendennis Castle above. Together the two positions could engage enemy vessels at multiple heights as they attempted to enter the Carrick Roads, making the approach to Falmouth one of the most heavily defended harbours in Tudor England.
