History & Significance

Eilean Donan Castle had been associated with various clans including the MacRaes and MacDonalds. The MacKenzies of Kintail asserted control of the castle in the early sixteenth century and it became their principal stronghold. The takeover was achieved partly through marriage alliances and partly through armed pressure. The castle remained the seat of MacKenzie power until destroyed by government forces in 1719.
