The Barbarian Conspiracy of 367 — simultaneous Pictish, Irish, and Saxon attacks that overwhelmed the Roman defences of Britain — reached into the Midlands. Leicester's Roman walls were significantly strengthened in the later 4th century, suggesting real military threat. The town's late Roman wealth, evidenced by the magnificent Jewry Wall baths, was vulnerable to raiders pushing up the Soar and Welland river systems. Count Theodosius restored Roman order after 368 but the garrison was permanently weakened.
