The Battle

History & Significance

The Scottish Reformation effectively began militarily at Perth in May 1559. Following John Knox's incendiary sermon at St John's Kirk, a mob attacked and stripped the friaries of Perth. Mary of Guise's government sent a French-led army to suppress the disorder. The Protestant lords rallied to defend Perth and a brief standoff occurred before negotiations. The fall of Perth to Protestant control was the first major territorial success of the Reformation movement.
