History & Significance

The death of Sigurd the Stout at Clontarf in 1014 with most of his warriors left Orkney vulnerable. A separate entry from the main Clontarf entry — this records the domestic impact in Orkney itself where the loss of the earl and so many fighting men created a succession crisis. Three of Sigurd's sons by different mothers contested the earldom, leading to division and weakness in the decade after Clontarf.
