Having been accepted as king by the Northumbrian Danes, Aethelwold returned south with an East Anglian Danish army and launched raids into English Mercia and Wessex. The Chronicle records he led the army as far as Cricklade on the upper Thames. Edward followed and ravaged East Anglia in retaliation, though the Kentish contingent stayed too long and was caught returning.
