Before turning his attention to Lothian and Northumbria, Aedan mac Gabráin conducted aggressive campaigns in multiple directions. The British kingdom of Rheged controlled much of south-west Scotland and northern England. Dalriadan pressure on Rheged's northern flank may have contributed to Rheged's eventual absorption by Northumbria. The precise geography of these early conflicts is obscure but the Galloway coast was clearly contested between Dalriada and the British kingdoms.
