The Battle

History & Significance

Just weeks after Dupplin Moor had made Balliol King of Scots, the Scottish recovery was swift and spectacular. A night raid by Archibald Douglas and Simon Fraser caught Balliols forces at Annan completely unprepared. His brother Henry was killed. Balliol himself escaped with his life but little else, reportedly riding into England without proper clothing. His rapid collapse showed that the Scottish nobility would not accept Balliol regardless of his military victories — setting the stage for Edward IIIs direct intervention at Halidon Hill in 1333.
