History & Significance

In February 1646 Corfe Castle was betrayed by Colonel Pitman, who admitted a Parliament force disguised as Royalist reinforcements; the castle fell without a major assault and was subsequently demolished by order of Parliament, leaving the spectacular ruin visible today.
