History & Significance

Following the government victory at Bothwell Bridge in June 1679, Claverhouse continued counter-insurgency operations through Ayrshire pursuing Covenanting survivors who had escaped the main battle. Operations near Muirkirk in east Ayrshire targeted those who had fled into the upland parishes. These post-Bothwell operations continued the brutal suppression of Covenanting resistance in the southwest.
