The Battle

History & Significance

Following the sack of Lindisfarne, King Aethelred I of Northumbria organised coastal watch-posts and local fyrd musters along the Northumbrian shore. Alcuin wrote urging Northumbrian nobles to defend their shores. Several skirmishes with Viking scouts are implied in later annals. The episode marks the beginning of sustained Viking pressure on the Northumbrian coast.
