History & Significance

The second siege of Lathom House, after the Countess of Derby had been evacuated, ended in Royalist surrender. The defenders could not repeat the miraculous resistance of 1644 without the Countess's leadership. Parliament demolished much of the house; the Countess continued Royalist resistance from the Isle of Man.
