Sandwich was seized by Royalists during the 1648 Kentish rising and formed part of the coastal arc of Royalist-held territory stretching from Sandwich to Deal and Walmer. The mutinous Parliamentary fleet anchored in the Downs cooperated with these shore-based Royalists.
