The Battle

History & Significance

The first royal attempt to suppress Kett's rebellion failed ignominiously. The Marquess of Northampton entered Norwich but was expelled by the rebels after fierce street fighting in which Lord Sheffield was killed. The defeat was a serious embarrassment for Protector Somerset's government and demonstrated that the rebellion had real military capability. The crown was forced to send a much larger force under the Earl of Warwick.

Casualties & Losses

Lord Sheffield killed; several hundred killed on both sides
