The Battle

History & Significance

Lord Mountjoy's systematic campaign against O'Neill. O'Neill fortified the Moyry Pass (Gap of the North), the main entry into Ulster, with earthworks and trenches. He held Mountjoy for several weeks with much smaller forces. Eventually Mountjoy found another route and entered Ulster. The engagement showed Mountjoy's methodical approach — building forts, cutting off supplies — that would ultimately defeat O'Neill.
