History & Significance

Ida of Bernicia seized the great rock of Bamburgh around 547 and began building the Northumbrian kingdom. The Anglian takeover of this coastal fortress marked the beginning of the political entity that would become Northumbria. The Chronicle records his reign of twelve years and his role as ancestor of the Northumbrian kings.
