History & Significance

The Kentish rising of 1648 (Second Civil War) began with a mass petition turned armed revolt. The rebels initially secured Rochester and its vital bridge over the Medway. This gave the rising momentum — ultimately gathering perhaps 11,000 men before being crushed by Fairfax at Maidstone in June 1648.
