Patrick Sellar as factor for the Countess of Sutherland conducted the most notorious clearances in Strathnaver, burning homes over the heads of elderly tenants who were unable to move. Sellar was subsequently tried for culpable homicide but acquitted. The Strathnaver clearances became the defining symbol of Highland Clearance brutality.
