Rosal is a deserted township located within Naver Forest in Strathnaver, Sutherland, in the Scottish Highlands. The settlement comprises the remains of traditional stone buildings and field systems that date from the medieval and early modern periods, representing a typical Highland township that was occupied until the early nineteenth century. The site is significant as evidence of the upheaval caused by the Highland Clearances, when such communities were depopulated to make way for sheep farming and later forestry. The physical remains, including foundation stones and cairns scattered across the landscape, provide important archaeological testimony to the pattern of rural settlement and agricultural practice that characterized the Highlands before their transformation during the clearance period.
