The Viking sack of Ipswich in 991 immediately preceded the Battle of Maldon. The Viking fleet of Olaf Tryggvason and others raided the Suffolk coast, sacking Ipswich, before the confrontation with Byrhtnoth\'s Essex army at Maldon. The raid on Ipswich demonstrated the vulnerability of east coast towns to Viking sea-borne assault and contributed to the decision to pay Danegeld — the tribute that Aethelred\'s government began paying after Maldon to buy off the Vikings. Ipswich was one of the largest English towns of the late Saxon period and its sack was a significant blow.
