History & Significance

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that Watchet in Somerset was ravaged and Goda the Devon thegn was killed. This engagement is notable as one of the better-documented skirmishes of the renewed Viking raids, naming specific English defenders. Watchet was an important trading port and the raid shows that Somerset's coast was again vulnerable after the relative peace of Edgar's reign.
