The Battle

History & Significance

After the cavalry victory on Beacon Hill at Gainsborough on 28 July 1643, Cromwell found the Earl of Newcastle arriving with a large relief army. Cromwell conducted a fighting withdrawal across the flat Lincolnshire plain, keeping his horse in formation under pursuit pressure and reaching safety at Lincoln. The withdrawal demonstrated his ability to disengage under pressure.
