History & Significance

Donnington Castle's twin-towered gatehouse withstood prolonged Parliamentary bombardment. Charles I personally led a relief force after Second Newbury in November 1644, resupplying the garrison and defying Parliament's failure to coordinate their three armies at the battle. The castle held out until 1646.
