The Battle

History & Significance

Aelle and Cissa besieged Andredesceaster (Pevensey Roman fort) and slaughtered all the inhabitants; the Chronicle records not a single Briton was left alive. The massacre of the Pevensey garrison was the bloodiest recorded event of the Saxon conquest of Sussex and secured the South Saxons eastern flank.
