The Battle

History & Significance

Norse raiders used the sheltered anchorage of Portree Bay on Skye as a base for operations along the Skye coast and into the Sound of Raasay. The Norse presence at Portree is reflected in the name itself which may derive from the Norse Port Righ meaning Kings Harbour. Repeated Norse use of Portree Bay contributed to the eventual Norse-Gaelic character of Skye.
