The Battle

History & Significance

At Pinkie on the English right, Somerset's cavalry under Lord Grey charged the Scottish left wing before the main battle was ready. The charge was initially repulsed by Scottish pikemen but as the Scottish army advanced toward the English line it came under sustained fire from English ships in the Forth and English arquebusiers. The cavalry then fell on the broken Scottish flank. The combination of naval gunfire, arquebuses, and horse proved irresistible and the Scottish left collapsed first.
