History & Significance

Halfdan led the Danish army from Cambridge north to Northumbria in 875, ravaging the kingdom and striking against the Picts and the Strathclyde Welsh. He partitioned Northumbria among his men in 876, with each man ploughing and supporting himself. This was the first Danish land settlement in England and created the Danelaw north.
