History & Significance

Braintree was one of several Essex towns where Royalist sympathisers assembled during the Second Civil War. The Braintree contingent joined the main Essex Royalist force that converged on Chelmsford and then Colchester. The rising showed the depth of anti-Parliamentary feeling in Essex even in a county that had been a Parliamentary stronghold in the First Civil War.
