History & Significance

Coenwulf of Mercia, the last truly powerful Mercian king, died at Basingwerk in Flintshire while on campaign against the Welsh in 821. His death ended the last period of strong Mercian kingship. The rapid succession of weak kings that followed led directly to Ellendun and the end of Mercian supremacy. Coenwulf held Mercia together by force of personality and military strength.
