Nottingham Castle was a Parliamentary outpost in Royalist-dominated Nottinghamshire. The garrison repeatedly held off Royalist attacks; Colonel Hutchinson's defence was later described by his wife Lucy Hutchinson in her celebrated memoir, one of the finest accounts of Civil War garrison life.
