Nottingham Castle was the site where Charles I raised his royal standard in August 1642, marking the formal opening of the Civil War. However, the castle itself remained in Parliamentary hands throughout the conflict under Governor John Hutchinson. Royalist forces repeatedly threatened the town and castle, and there were several skirmishes in the surrounding area.
