The Battle

History & Significance

The Battle of Selby on 11 April 1644 saw Parliamentary forces under Sir Thomas Fairfax storming the town held by Colonel John Bellasis. Fairfax attacked simultaneously from north and south, fighting through the streets. The Royalist garrison was overwhelmed and Bellasis captured. The victory opened the way for the Scots to join Fairfax in the Yorkshire campaign leading to Marston Moor.
