The Battle

History & Significance

Following Ellendun, Egbert sent his son Æthelwulf with an army to expel the Mercian king Baldred from Kent. Baldred was driven over the Thames and Kent, Surrey, Sussex, and Essex all submitted to Egbert. The rapid collapse of Mercian power in the southeast showed how dependent it had been on military dominance.
