The Battle

History & Significance

The monks of Jervaulx Cistercian abbey in Wensleydale joined the Pilgrimage of Grace and the abbey precinct was used as a muster and supply point for the rising in the dales. Abbot Adam Sedbar was later accused of sheltering rebel leaders. The abbey was subsequently dissolved and Sedbar executed for his role in the revolt, making Jervaulx one of the few abbeys whose dissolution was directly linked to armed resistance.
