History & Significance

After the death of Penda at the Battle of Winwaed (655), Mercia briefly collapsed as a political entity. Welsh border kingdoms — particularly Powys — took the opportunity to raid and possibly recover territories lost in previous decades. The Welsh annals record activity in the Mercian border zone in this period. Specific battles are not individually named but the period represents the high-water mark of early medieval Welsh territorial recovery.
