The Battle

History & Significance

The same Thomas Wharton who had broken the Scottish army at Solway Moss in 1542 continued aggressive border operations throughout the Rough Wooing. Annandale — already weakened by the Maxwell-Johnstone feud — was repeatedly raided. The English used local intelligence from the Solway Moss prisoners — many of whom became English clients in exchange for freedom. The systematic devastation of Dumfriesshire and Annandale in this period created a generation of poverty and displacement.
