History & Significance

Edward I died on 7 July 1307 at Burgh-by-Sands on the Solway Firth while assembling an army for a final campaign to crush Bruce. His death fundamentally altered the strategic situation: his son Edward II lacked both the military skill and the personal determination of his father, and the great English army that had assembled dispersed. Bruce was given the breathing space he needed to consolidate his position in Scotland. Edward I's final campaign plan — to drive into Galloway and then northward — died with him.
